Chinese Water Dragon

Chinese Water Dragon is a species of agamid lizard which is mostly found in China and mainland Southeast Asia. It is also known as the Thai water dragon, Asian water dragon, and green water dragon as well. These look like small iguanas and spend a lot of their time swimming. These are the popular pet reptiles due to their smaller size, but their care requirements are more intense than most peoples anticipate.

Chinese Water Dragon Characteristics

The species of lizard can grow their length up to 1 meter in total size, including the tail, and can live from ten to fifteen years. The species have the coloration ranges from dark to light green, or sometimes purple with an orange stomach. Adult males have larger and more triangular heads than females, and develop larger crests on the head, tail, and neck and are larger in general. These can be used there as a weapon, for balance and to assist swimming.

Chinese Water Dragon Care

Water dragons generally need large enclosures. An enclosure of the larger sized maybe costly unless you know your dragons accurate sized. Large fish tanks are often used but are not ideal. It requires a good pool of water. It should be large and deep enough so that a dragon can submerge at least half its height. The humidity should be kept around 80% inside the enclosure for the species. You need to also maintain the temperature according to day and night time.

Water dragons live in the areas with average humidity levels of 40-80% and temperatures ranging from 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit. If threatened, these jump into the water and either swim to safety or remain submerged for up to 90 minutes.

The species are omnivores by nature, but they are natural predators and prefer to eat meat over fruits and vegetables whenever possible.  These enjoying the eating different meals each day, which may require you to come up with a feeding schedule to ensure enough variety. If your water dragon becomes bored with a bland diet it may end up refusing to eat entirely, and you surely don’t want that.
