Moloch

Moloch is an Australian lizard which is better known as the thorny devil, mountain lizard, or thorny lizard. This is the sole species of the genus Moloch. The thorny dragon grows up to 20 cm in length and can live for up to 15-20 years.

What is Moloch

The name of lizard is given to it on the behalf of its appearance. The species was first described in writing by the biologist John Edward Gray in 1841. While it is the only one contained in the genus, which has the other species might remain to be found in the wild. This similarity is usually believed of an example of convergent evolution.

Moloch Care

The care of the species is not applicable to this as they can live in the unique habitat only in Australia. These are not able to survive in the other habitat, once they catch out from their habitat, they will die after a few time because of starvation. This is the reason, Australia doesn’t allow to export this wildlife.

Moloch Facts

  • Moloch can reach 5.9 to 8 inches in length and females generally larger than males.
  • The body of the species covered with orange, yellow, red, grey, brown, and white markings.
  • They are also able to change the colors of the body during the day and seasonally.
  • The body of the species covered with the cone-shaped spiny scales.
  • These lizards have bump on its neck which is also known as false head.
  • The diet of the species consists exclusively of ants.
  • The species can swallow 45 ants per minute using its sticky tongue.

Moloch Habitat

The species mainly lives in the arid scrubland and desert that covers most of central Australia, sandridge desert, and sandplain in the deep interior and the mallee belt. The habitat of the species coincides more with the regions of sandy loam soils than with a particular climate in Western Australia.

Moloch Diet

The species diet included ants, especially Ochetellus flavipes and other species in the Iridomyrmex or Ochetellus genera. The single lizard often eats thousands of ants in one day. The species get the moisture in the dry desert by the condensation of dew on their bodies at night. They are able to get the water falling all over on their bodies through capillary action.

Moloch Venom

Species of the lizard doesn’t contain the venom as they don’t have the glands to produce the venom. The species is not harmful to the peoples as these are non-venomous. Species mostly inhabits in the desert and doesn’t come out in the human territory. They hardly survive in the outside environment from their habitat.

Moloch Reproduction

Between the months of September and December, the females lay a clutch of 3-10 eggs. The female lay the eggs in a nesting burrow about 30cm underground. It takes about 3-4 months to hatch. Sometimes the eggs became the diet of the predators in the absence of mother female.

Moloch Bite

You can able to see the species by entering in their habitat which is in Australia. The species is hardly survived in the outside of their habitat. So, Australia restricted the exportation of this wildlife. The species is not considered as the harmful species to humans. These are rarely biting the humans and not able to do damage by biting.

Moloch As Pet

The species is only native to Australia and not able to survive in the other habitat due to its specific diet. This is the also reason that Australia doesn’t allow to export this wildlife. The species of lizard is not considered to get as the pet. It is hard to create similarly favorable habitat conditions for this species.
